CCA Thespians Soar at Recent District Festivals

By: Katlyn Cervone
Last semester, our middle and high school Thespian troupes illuminated for Jesus by earning the highest ratings and distinctions that can be earned in the competition! CCA’s Fine Arts Production Coordinator and Thespian Director, Katlyn Cervone, shares the riveting results and why theatre education matters.

At CCA, we believe theatre education provides students with fundamental skills necessary for future professionals, communicators, and leaders as well as a creative outlet to share the Gospel.

When competing in district and state-level competitions, our middle and high school students not only have the opportunity to master and share their craft, but to also witness to students from other local public and private schools who may not have a personal relationship with Jesus.

Last semester, our Thespian troupes illuminated for Christ by earning the highest ratings and distinctions that can be earned in the competition. Congratulations to the following groups!

  • Middle School Troupe 88684:

CCA's Junior Thespian Troupe 88684 brought home 6 superior awards and 8 excellent awards for their individual performances at the Jr. Thespian District Competition. Sofia Fernandez received the Critic's Choice award for her student written scene entitled Blank, and Elisabeth Chew, Sofia Fernandez, and Isabella Menditto received the Honorable Mention Award (2nd place in their category) for their ensemble acting!
  • High School Troupe 6817 One-Act Competition:

Our theatre endorsement students competed in the District One Act Festival and received a superior rating on their performance of Every Novel You Read in High School (In 25 Minutes or Less). The production, which was student-directed by senior Hannah Sherrod, also received a superior rating on the technical elements led by Abigail Alder and Jenna McCoy (Stage Management Team).

Maxim Rose brought home the All-Star Cast award for his portrayal of eight different characters throughout the half-hour performance.
  • High School Thespian Troupe 6817 Individual Event Competition:

CCA's Thespian Troupe 6817 competed against 29 other high schools in our district and brought home 12 superiors and 10 excellent awards! Seniors Jordyn Cervone and Kelsey Wells received the Honorable Mention Award for their duet acting scene of The Miracle Worker.

Furthermore, sophomore Angelina Ispir won the Critic's Choice Award (Best in Category) for her original costume designs of Miss Saigon. Angelina was also chosen by the judges as the best technical piece in the district and will represent CCA and District 7 Thespians at the Florida State Thespian Festival in March! And that’s not all . . . The Educational Theatre Association awarded her with a scholarship so she can further develop her skills in costume design. What a blessing!

I am so proud of the hard work and time these students have invested into developing their craft. Such high accolades that were awarded by the judges are a testament to their commitment and character. The confidence, creativity, discipline, and empathy that theatre instills in our students will surely benefit them in school, ministry, and in every aspect of their lives.

If the Lord is leading you to support the work He is doing through the CCA Fine Arts program, you can do so by purchasing a raffle ticket(s) to win a three-day, two-night trip to New York City, which includes a Visa voucher valued at $2,000 for airfare and hotel stay of your choice as well as 4 tickets to the musical Hamilton at the Richard Rogers Theatre on June 6, 2020. The winning ticket will be drawn at the last performance of CCA’s Shrek The Musical JR on February 15, 2020.

The funds raised from this raffle will help CCA students with travel costs associated with competitions and aid in the construction of a state-of-the-art scene shop that will present our students with new growth opportunities in a safe working environment!

“And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” —Colossians 3:17
