On Wednesday, May 9, Calvary Christian hosted Westminster Christian in the FHSAA Class 4A Regional Semifinal. Christian Scott pitched a complete game while the offense would put up nine runs on thirteen hits. Just a few weeks earlier, the Warriors handed CCA a heart-wrenching 3-2 loss.
For the past few years, the Eagles have put the ball in Christian Scott's hand when the season is on the line, and the senior would get the start in this win or go home situation. After facing the minimum in the first, Dante Girardi would smacke a double to right-center field. Girardi would eventually advance to third on a pass ball and score on a wild pitch.
Both teams got through the second inning without giving up runs, but WCS would put three up in the third on two hits, a single and a hit by pitch. CCA would strike back quickly as the Warrior pitcher struggled to find the strikezone. CCA put up two runs on one single and four walks. Ironically, CCA lost their previous outing to WCS due to the walk.
Tied at three after three innings, Roberto Pena would double in the fifth then slide around the tag to get the go-ahead run. Mykanthony Valdez led off the sixth inning with a pinch-hit solo shot to left. Valdez's blast energized his teammates, who put up another four runs on six hits. Scott struck out the first two batters in the final inning. The final out came on a high fly ball to right.
Christian Scott threw a complete game in just 85 pitches and struck out eight. The offense was led by Dante Girardi's three hits, Roberto Pena's three runs, and Ryan Keenan knotched three RBI's.
The Eagles will host Florida Christian on Tuesday, May 15 at 4:00 PM. Admission is $7.
A handful of young painters are getting to experience life as working artists as they complete a commissioned mural for a local business owner. Students and teachers of Calvary Christian Academy's National Art Honors Society shared with us their plans to experience art abroad.
