Eagles Varsity Baseball Team Advances Toward State Title

Keith Huisman
The Eagles have shown grit as they take ground toward the FHSAA Baseball Class 4A State Championship.

The CCA Varsity Baseball Team began defending their state title last week in the District tournament. In their first game, they got the scare of a lifetime as SLAM Academy jumped out to 6-0 lead. In the fifth and sixth inning, a fantastic series of plays changed the game for the Eagles.

Ty Hollandsworth hit two home runs, Ben Rozenblum hit one, and Jacob Howard hit a grand slam to win the game 7-6. The Eagles moved on to play the tournament host, Westminster Academy, for the District Championship last Thursday. The team secured their third district championship in a row with an 8-1 win over the Lions.

Winning the district title means the team got to host the first round of regional play against the Warriors of Westminster Christian on Tuesday, May 14. The regional semifinal was one both teams were looking at from the beginning of the season.

Calvary took a one-run lead when Ty Hollandsworth scored from second base on an error. Tyler Knierim spread the lead in the fourth inning with a home run that caromed off the scoreboard in right field.
The Eagles are eager to end it with another championship title, but they know their fight is far from over.
The Warriors evened the score in the fifth inning with a bases loaded single, but Calvary came right back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs scoring on a bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice. Skylar Gonzalez earned the win with five innings of solid pitching. Chase Cone came in for the final two innings to secure the 4-2 victory, striking out five batters.

Calvary advanced to the Regional Championship Friday, May 17 against Florida Christian High School in Miami. Last year, CCA hosted this game, which took five days to complete due to weather. This year, the Patriots had the home field advantage.

Ben Rozenblum sent a 2-out first pitch fastball over the left field fence to take the lead in the 1st. Mykanthony Valdez got Jonathan Lane home on an infield hit in the 3rd. And Ryan Keenan scored on a sac bunt from Jacob Howard. All while Andy Painter pitched a 3-hitter.

The boys fought hard and with a score of 3–1, the Eagles took home the Regional Championship title and will advance toward the state finals for a fourth consecutive year! The  FHSAA Class 4A State Semi-Final is Friday, May 24 and from there the State Championship on Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 PM.

The Eagles are eager to end it with another championship title, but they know their fight is far from over.

Go Eagles!
