7 Tips for Back-to-School Success

Nia Hendricks
The sun is setting on summertime — it’s almost time to get back to school! Here are a few tips that will help your child start the school year off right.

With the end of summer comes a fresh start — a new school year! Whether that makes you feel nervous, excited, or a little of both, here are a few tips that will help your child start the school year off right.

  1. Ease into the routine.

Reinstate school routines during the last few weeks of summer vacation — this is probably the best way to minimize stress as the school year approaches! Start waking up a little bit earlier, eating breakfast together, packing lunches, and enforcing a bedtime or curfew. Doing these things will help minimize the shock that often comes with transitioning from lazy summer days to fast-paced school schedules.

  2. Meet your child’s teacher(s).

Make friends with faculty early on and everyone will feel more comfortable getting back to school! Take advantage of your school’s open house or back-to-school night, they are great opportunities for you to make connections with the people who will be with your child everyday for the next 10 months.

  3. Catch up on summer reading.

Most secondary schools give students summer reading requirements. Check in on your child’s summer reading projects and make sure they’re not waiting until the last minute to complete their assignments. If your child is younger or doesn’t have a summer reading assignment, encourage them to read a book that will challenge their skills and prepare them for their next grade level.

  4. Break in new shoes before the first day.

This may seem silly, but you’d be surprised how many kids finish the first day of school in need of band-aids for their blistered feet! If you’ll be sending your child to school in fresh sneakers, just make sure they walk around in them for a few days first.

  5. Meal plan.

Meals may look like a free-for-all in the summer, but that (sadly) doesn’t fly in the fall. If you don’t want to budget for school lunches, create a meal plan to help you as you grocery shop. You can even get your kids into the habit of packing lunches in the summer, it can be a fun way to anticipate the new school year!

  6. Discuss your child’s goals.

Things happen fast once the school year starts. Make time to talk about your child’s goals and dreams for this upcoming year. Do they want to try out a new sport or club? Take note and keep an eye out for when these things begin so that your child doesn’t miss the opportunity.

  7. Create a family calendar.

Field trips, dances, parent/teacher conferences — the list of school events doesn’t stop! Look ahead each month and write out important dates and deadlines on a calendar that everyone in the family can see. Organizing your schedules will keep everyone accountable to their commitments, and minimize those last minute dashes out the door to soccer practice!

With these tips, good communication, and a positive outlook, your family can look forward to an exciting year of learning and development for your child!
