CCA’s Homecoming festivities point students to Jesus through celebration and collaboration. This year’s theme highlighted the trends that are defining this generation. We as Christians have the freedom in Christ to enjoy them and have fun so long as we are standing firm in Truth and representing Christ well.
Homecoming is a longtime American tradition that has been passed down since the early 1900s—one that we have embraced here at Calvary Christian Academy in a way that is God-honoring and fun! We just wrapped up this year’s Homecoming week festivities, which included dress-up days, Field Day, games, football and tailgates, a pep rally, our Celebration Social dance, and a whole lot of school spirit . . . Go Eagles!
Our 2019 theme—#Trending—highlighted the fads that are currently defining this generation, like how disco music boomed in the 70s, hair perms and breakdancing defined the 80s, and slap-on bracelets and Tamagotchi toys made their debuts in the 90s. Our high school students produced a video summarizing today’s trends that will go down in the history books:
As our society and culture changes throughout the years, we should be reminded that although we as Christians are
in the world, Jesus commands us to not be
of the world, compromising our values and God’s standards to fit in (
John 17:14-18). However, we have the freedom in Christ to enjoy these trends so long as we are standing firm in Truth, guarding our hearts and minds, and asking the Lord for wisdom to know when what’s trending contradicts biblical principles.
This year, our students and staff creatively connected the #Trending theme with our core values of celebration and collaboration.
The fun we have should ultimately be healthy, God-honoring . . .
We encourage our students to celebrate and live in the
now by creating moments and memories with their friends that they can look back on with fondness and no regrets. We desire for all our students to sense the joy of the Lord (
Nehemiah 8:10) here at CCA and for them to understand that Christians can have fun too! The fun we have should ultimately be healthy, God-honoring and reflect Philipians 4:8.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Homecoming Field Day activities such as tug-o-war and our powder puff game aim to promote collaboration and unity among each participating class. As they come together to represent their class and work toward a common goal, we want them to see that they are better together. In the same way, when we as the body of Christ are unified, the impact we can make for the Kingdom will be that much more far-reaching and illuminous.

Although Homecoming 2019 has come to an end, the fun and excitement can continue in your homes! Ask the Lord to guide you toward activities and outings that will also foster celebration, collaboration, and quality time amongst your family. Websites and apps like

We pray that as our students and families draw closer to each other through celebratory occasions, they draw closer as a unified group to the Lord, the giver of all good gifts (
James 1:17).
