5 Habits That Will Help Your Family Grow Their Faith

Practical wisdom to help your family grow in their walk with the Lord.
PB & J sack lunches packed? Check. Field trip permission slip signed? Check. Teeth brushed and hands washed? Check. Bible story before putting the kids down... Check?
Sometimes spending time with God becomes part of the checklist. With all the things parents have to do in a day, it can happen fast. But it’s important not to treat God like a checklist item, not only for our own sake, but for our family’s.
After all, He gives us the strength and the power to handle the checklist as well as the peace and joy to make it through what we can’t handle! If you’re looking for ways to grow as a Christian family, check out the following tips:
Show your children what it’s like to genuinely spend time with God.
Studying the Bible together is a great idea, but prioritizing one-on-one time with the Lord can have a big impact on your kids as well! Prayer, reading the Bible, and sitting in silence are just a few ways you can connect with God. It’s less important which method you choose so much as the posture of your heart.
Share your testimony and encourage your children to share theirs.
Isaiah 38:19 says, “The living, the living man, he shall praise You, As I do this day; The father shall make known Your truth to the children.” Help your kids understand that God takes an active role your life by telling them what God has done for you. Then encourage them to be on the lookout for God at work in their lives. Has God answered their prayers recently? Write them down in a journal so you can remember as a family how God has been present in both good times and bad.
Don’t shy away from questions; instead, look for answers together.
We all know that kids can ask a lot of questions, and we don’t always have the answer. Be encouraged that even if you don’t know the answer, you can seek answers in books and on the web.
Find a way for your children to use their gifts in ministry.
It’s never too early for your children to get involved in the Great Commission, and I’ve met several young kids who really enjoy volunteering for a good cause! Encourage them to use their strengths and gifts to serve others at church or in your community. If your children are musical, they might enjoy performing at local nursing homes and meeting the residents. Or maybe you volunteer as family to greet people at church or even go on a mission trip. Whatever your interests, serving together will help others and provide a great opportunity for you to bond!
Live out the lifestyle of Christianity from a place of sonship.
You don’t have to strive for God’s love because it has already been freely given to you! Your children will benefit most from seeing you live from a place of wholeness and completeness in Christ. Remember your identity as a child of God and co-heir with Christ. Remember that the work is finished and the victory belongs to our God. Your children will see the fruit of your relationship with the Lord, which will be the strongest testimony you could give them.
It’s so rewarding to see children own their faith! Everyone’s journey is different, but you can model what an active relationship with God looks like for you by implementing these habits in your life. God will take care of the rest!
