The way children learn at school has undergone significant changes over the past decade. With advancements in technology and evolving educational methodologies, parents may find it increasingly challenging to support their child academically at home.

Whether it's assisting with homework, aiding in test preparation, or reinforcing skills, parents often seek guidance on how best to help their children thrive academically. Questions related to this topic are the ones I’ve heard most often in parent-teacher conferences throughout my 16 years teaching, and they stem from a genuine desire to see their children succeed. As a mother to two boys, I understand this sentiment completely!
Whether it's assisting with homework, aiding in test preparation, or reinforcing skills, parents often seek guidance on how best to help their children thrive academically.
Fortunately, with the right tools and resources, you can play an instrumental role in positively influencing your child's learning outcomes. Here are several easy-to-implement strategies to foster an environment conducive to learning at home:

  1. Create a designated study area

Setting up a quiet, organized space specifically dedicated to studying can significantly enhance your child's focus and productivity. Eliminate distractions and ensure the area is equipped with necessary supplies, such as textbooks, notebooks, and stationery.

  2. Establish a routine

Consistency is key to developing good study habits. Create a daily schedule that includes dedicated time for homework, studying, and breaks. A structured routine not only helps your child stay on track but also fosters a sense of discipline and responsibility.

  3. Encourage reading

Reading is fundamental to academic success and intellectual growth. Regular reading sessions with your child not only improve literacy skills but also instill a lifelong love for learning. Consider exploring a variety of genres and subjects to broaden your child's horizons. Be sure to read out loud with your child as well!

  4. Be patient and supportive

Every child learns at their own pace, and setbacks are a natural part of the learning process. Offer unwavering patience, encouragement, and support, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and resilience in the face of challenges.

This March and April, I will be hosting a series of free workshops that will empower upper elementary (3rd–5th grade) parents at CCA Fort Lauderdale with more proven strategies and tools to support their child at home, specifically in the areas of reading comprehension, math, and writing. If you are a CCA parent in these grades, click here to learn more and RSVP!

When we unite under a common goal as parents and educators, we all win – you strengthen your parenting, your child flourishes, and us educators can continue to teach your child more about God’s incredible world. Investing time and effort in nurturing your child's educational journey is a profound expression of love and a vital step towards preparing them for future success.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." —Galatians 6:9
