25 Prayers for 25 Years | Day 12 | The Importance of Confession in Prayer

By: Keith Huisman
In today’s devotional, CCA's District Director of Athletics, Keith Huisman, continues our 25 Prayers for 25 Years series by introducing us to the importance of confession in prayer.

Scripture:

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

–1 John 1:9

Reflection:

When we talk about prayer, we often think of praise, thanksgiving, or bringing our needs before God. But one of the most powerful, humbling, and transformative aspects of prayer is confession.

Confession is more than simply listing our mistakes – it is the honest posture of a heart that recognizes its deep need for God’s mercy and grace. It is in this moment that we stop pretending we have it all together and admit that we’ve fallen short. And beautifully, it is also the place where God meets us with open arms.

The Gospel message is at the heart of confession. We confess because we have a Savior – Jesus – who has already paid the price for every sin. Through His death on the cross and resurrection, we have the assurance that no sin is too great and no heart is too far gone.

Confession doesn’t lead us to shame, but to freedom. It is a reminder that we are not defined by our failures, but by His forgiveness. In confessing, we are not condemned – we are cleansed, restored, and renewed.

As we celebrate 25 years of God’s faithfulness at CCA and look toward the future, let us commit to being a community marked by repentance and grace. May confession become a rhythm in our prayer lives – not just a once-in-a-while moment, but a regular act of surrender that keeps our hearts soft and our eyes fixed on Jesus.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your endless mercy. We confess that we have sinned in ways seen and unseen – through our words, thoughts, and actions. But we thank You that in Jesus, we are forgiven, loved, and made new.

Teach us to walk in humility, to keep short accounts with You, and to live in the freedom that only the Gospel provides. Help us become a community that confesses boldly, forgives freely, and reflects Your grace in every way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
