On Thursday, May 3 at 7:00 PM, the Eagles stepped on the diamond to face the tournament host, Westminster Academy for the FHSAA Class 4A District 7 Championship. The Eagles posted two runs in the first inning, and seven runs in the sixth, while WA could plate just one run in the third inning. CCA will host the regional semifinal game on Wednesday, May 9 at 4:00 PM against either Westminster Christian or Florida Christian.
Freshman phenom, Andrew Painter took to the mound in the championship game. Painter struck out five and gave up just one run on four and two-thirds innings. Senior reliever, Timmy Watkins, went the final two and one-third innings, striking out three.
Offensively, Roberto Pena hit a two-run blast in the opening inning to start things off right. The Lions manufactured their only run in the second. Calvary's bats went dormant for five innings, but came to life in the sixth. Pena and David Judge would score on a Tyler Knierim single. Ryan Keenan plated a run on a wild pitch. Ben Rozenblum stepped to the plate with one out and runners on first and third. The junior catcher hit a no-doubter to left-center field.
Calvary also had solid defense behind the pitching duo. Tyler Knierim had a diving catch in the fifth, and Dante Girardi and Roberto Pena each had solid plays at short stop and third base respectively.
CCA will have home-field advantage throughout regional play. Should they win Wednesday, May 9, Calvary will play for a regional championship the following Tuesday, May 15.
A handful of young painters are getting to experience life as working artists as they complete a commissioned mural for a local business owner. Students and teachers of Calvary Christian Academy's National Art Honors Society shared with us their plans to experience art abroad.
