Calvary Boys Lacrosse Awakens to Topple State Contender American Heritage Plantation

Adam Bond
After a difficult start to the season, the Calvary Boys' lacrosse team awakened to their phenomenal potential and defeated one of the best teams in the state over the last several years, Heritage Plantation, 7-4.

The game was a defensive slugfest with a lot of mistakes made by both offenses. We were up 1-0 at the end of the first quarter. Then we were down 3-2 at half time. Heritage came out after the half and put a quick one in to make it 4-2 with a lot of time left on the clock.

And then it happened.

Calvary was struggling to clear the ball out of our defensive end of the field when junior attackman Jake Tralongo streaked across the half line and caught an impossible pass from senior captain Nick Bates one handed and fully extended in the air between two Heritage players. He landed and darted between the two opponents only to find himself with three more white jerseys breathing down his neck. Sidestepping, juking and spinning, he made his way down the sideline, absorbing check after check. Finally clear, he safely moved the ball to senior captain Noah Horne and took up his normal position behind the goal while Horne carried the ball towards him. As they got closer together, they realized they had a two-on-one on the right side behind. Horne drew the defender and Tralongo bolted backdoor towards the goal. Horne fired the ball to Tralongo who caught it and immediately got smashed by another sliding defender. He spun as he fell to the ground, but amazingly, he still had the ball in his stick. From his knees, he ripped a shot to the lower corner just as another defender hit him, but it was too late. Goal, Calvary. The bench erupted. The team had awakened.

The 4th quarter started with us down 4-3 but it didn’t matter. The defense completely shut out Heritage in the 4th quarter while the offense hit their stride with four straight goals, one each by senior Killian Sullivan, sophomore Tyler Asbate, senior Noah Horne and freshman Blayze Rodriguez.

Game over, Calvary wins 7-4.

The boys have a busy week coming up with two early games against Archbishop McCarthy on Monday, district opponent North Broward Prep on Tuesday, and then a showdown with Pine Crest on Friday night at 7pm on Calvary Field. We would LOVE to see the school out there Friday cheering us on!
