Great Lessons Learned From A Big Loss

Scott Wright
The Calvary Lady Eagles are learning great lessons this season. After a second straight loss, the importance of consistent & intense collective possession while attacking and the willingness to put in a challenge that will stop the opponents transition is ever more vital to our success. When we play top teams they are going to expose our weaknesses and our  "boldness" in our style of play. The world sport of football is a team sport based on energy, and the team with the strongest collective energy wins. We need to be focused and preparing at all times during the game.. there is no time to let our mind rest. After the game we can rest, at training we can implement aspects to support recovery, but during games, we must work hard from the start to the finish.
At the end of the first half the score was 0-7, we were losing. We came out slow and NBP was able to score goals by using accurate passing to find their players that were occupying the space between our defenders. Soccer is a mental game and the team that dominates typically has a better understanding of space. Giving credit where it is due, NBP players did a great job of moving in to the space away from our defenders and relied on a possession style of play to find them. This is how they scored 6 of their 7 goals.. the 7th was from a wonderfully struck free kick that dipped below our crossbar with top spin.

At half time we reminded ourselves that the intensity that we warm up with will mirror the intensity that we will compete with. We must bring more edge to our style of play or we will see more of these types of results in the future. We challenged the players to step it up in the second half and God knows they did!

In the first quarter of the second half we didn't allow a goal! Great defending and goal keeping, plus a desire to transition the ball in to NBP's attacking half kept them at bay, but it was clear that NBP wanted the 8th and final goal...

In the final quarter of the game we could sense low energy from us and an intense energy from the opponent. God blessed us by keeping the ball out of the goal by their shots hitting the post, cross bar, or missing just wide. There was also great goalkeeping by Ana Shumate. Ana always plays with great desire and we should allow her energy to fill the rest of the team. It wasn't until around 5 minutes were left in the game where our opponent was able to find the 8th and final goal of the game, ending it by mercy rule.

It's important that we speak life in to our players, Team, and great CCA, but it's also important to feel these moments. We must be thankful that God provides us this firm foundation to grow from, for these wonderful lessons will propel us in to a more successful future! Thank you God for the opportunity to learn and grow with this great Team and School! Higher levels here we come!
