Super sophomore Jon Santana led the offense with 9 goals, and senior Ian Carvajal anchored the defense with 16 saves as Calvary pulled out the come-from-behind victory last night against a very skilled and well-coached University School team.
At two different points during the game, the Eagles were down by five goals, but patience, grit and discipline saw them claw back slowly to put the game within reach. With two minutes to go in the game, the Eagles were down 16-13. That's when Carvajal hit his stride and just decided the Sharks were done scoring for the night, stopping multiple point-blank shots. On the other side of the field, meanwhile, Tyler Asbate and Jon Santana connected on a beautiful pick and roll that had Santana netting his 8th goal to make it 16-14. Then on the next possession, Nate Rodriguez scored his 4th goal, tiptoeing through the aggressive defense and spinning to put the shot in on the near side with 1:35 left in the game: 16-15. After that, it was Tyler Asbate's turn to drive hard off a Carter Combs pick, dodging down the left alley and burying his third goal of the night in the lower corner: tied up at 16-16. With 20 seconds left in the game, Santana once again did Santana things and came around from behind the net to dunk his 9th goal of the night, putting the Eagles up one: 17-16. In the remaining seconds, the Sharks made a valiant last-ditch effort when #7, their best player, had the ball in his stick and his hands free for a hard shot to the lower corner. But the brick wall that is Ian Carvajal was up to the task, reacting with lightning quick reflexes and stretching out to make the save with 3 seconds left in the game. Carvajal knew they'd done it, and quickly launched the ball high into the night sky, tore off his helmet, and was immediately mobbed by his elated teammates.
This one will go down as one of the most spectacular wins in Calvary Lacrosse history, a game that our players, coaches, families and alumni in attendance will remember for a long time.
